Exploring the markets

On Friday as part of our new unit of inquiry into how markets exist in order to fulfill the needs and wants of a community. We had the opportunity to visit different markets around town.

We visited ;
- Art shops on street 178
- Lucky supermarket in Bassac Garden City
- Cane alley - cans shops on Sothearos Boulevard
- BKK1 market on St 380

The children really enjoyed the opportunity to visit these different places and notice what was happening at these venues and to wonder why.

The highlight was walking through the BKK1 market and seeing all the fresh produce and the vibrant colours.

Although some of it was extremely fresh.

Khmer New Year

Today our wonderful teaching assistance Mr Puy spoke to the grade 4 children about Khmer New Year.

He explained the origins of the story behind new year and some of the activities and games that will be taking place in the villages.

The youtube videos below are great.

One tells the story of Khmer New Year. It is in Khmer and very interesting.

The second video gives the reason why new year is celebrated in April.

Enjoy....

Home reading

This week the children were asked to bring a book or story from home that they could read to the class in their first language.

It was really nice to hear the children confidently speaking in their mother tongue.

The children were put into two groups where they got the opportunity to read to a group of children. Some were happy to read to the whole class.

Student Lead Conferences

On Friday we held our annual SLC.

Students came to class with their parents in tow to share what they have been doing in the class with their parents.

The children showed their blogs and solved some maths problems. They then got the parents to write a blog post asking the parents to tell what they liked about the experience.

It was great seeing how excited the children were to share with the parents what they had been learning in the class.

The children also got the opportunity to take their parents to the single subject teachers. The PE department had set up little stations for children to show what they had been doing and got the parents to have a go at what the children have been doing.
