Gamble on the Mekong - Investigative Journalist comes to ISPP

Today ISPP was visited by Tom Fawthrop, a major Southeast Asian journalist.

He came to screen part of his recent documentary The Great Gamble on the Mekong and to speak with the Grade 4 and Grade 8-10 students about the Mekong River and the effects of dam projects on people and the environment.
Tom Fawthrop is a world renowned investigative reporter and has written for some famous newspapers around the world. He was very passionate in protecting the Mekong River.

Many thanks to Tom for coming and educating students on such an important topic for the region and to Jon Banules for organising getting Tom into school.

3D printing and Minecraft

This week the class had two sessions with Mr Matt to learn how to use the 3D printer and to use marketplace mine-craft that Mr Matt has created.

The class was excited to learn how the 3D printer worked and to work through the tutorials to help create using in the programme.

They were also put into small groups and were set the challenge by Mr Matt to build a farm in his virtual marketplace he has created in mine-craft. Each group were given 10 coins between them and they had to buy seeds, plant them and then sell them in the marketplace to make more money so they can build up their farm supply.
The conversations happening in the groups was exciting to hear. The children had to work together and set tasks for each other to do while building up their livelihoods while still maintaining their health.

I think Mr Matt enjoyed his role as Minecraft teacher.

Exploring the markets

On Friday as part of our new unit of inquiry into how markets exist in order to fulfill the needs and wants of a community. We had the opportunity to visit different markets around town.

We visited ;
- Art shops on street 178
- Lucky supermarket in Bassac Garden City
- Cane alley - cans shops on Sothearos Boulevard
- BKK1 market on St 380

The children really enjoyed the opportunity to visit these different places and notice what was happening at these venues and to wonder why.

The highlight was walking through the BKK1 market and seeing all the fresh produce and the vibrant colours.

Although some of it was extremely fresh.
